Former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole is the first Kansan to be singled out for the new Kansas Walk of Honor. Ceremonies on Friday in Topeka will include the unveiling of a bronze plaque at the southeast corner of the Kansas Statehouse lawn. According to an editorial in The Lawrence Journal-World, “Plans call for the state to add up to three plaques a year to the Walk of Honor, which is intended to recognize people with significant connections to Kansas who have made notable contributions at the state and national level.”
So, now that we have this wonderful Kansas Walk of Honor, how about establishing a parallel Kansas Walk of Shame? Alongside those bronze plaques at the southeast corner of the Kansas Statehouse lawn, how about putting up some cheap miniature plastic fire hydrants for dogs to pay homage to those Kansans who have brought us nothing but ridicule and shame? My first nominee for a hellfire-red hydrant is, of course, our very own Pastor of Hate, the Rev. Fred Phelps of Topeka’s Westboro Church.

The Associated Press reports that Shintaro Ishihara, the governor of Tokyo, believes that the devastating earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown in Japan are “a punishment from heaven” because the Japanese have become greedy. Who knew that Fred Phelps has followers in Japan? He’s probably there right now with his placards and picket signs: ”Wasabi=Death!” ”God Hates Sushi!” ”Man Does Not Live on Ramen Alone!”

According to the morning paper, Kansas Republican State. Rep. Bill Otto ranted for nearly three minutes against President Obama at a recent legislative meeting, then later posted a YouTube video of himself singing an anti-Obama ”Redneck Rap” while wearing a hat that said, “OPOSSUM, the other dark meat.” At the end of his song, Otto points to his hat and says again, “Opossum, the other dark meat. A little greasy, but hey…” OTTO. That’s a Germanic name, isn’t it? I guess the less said about that, the better. One can make a joke of it, say that the man OTTO RESIGN. Or, at the very least, EAT CROW. We now add his name to THE KANSAS HALL OF SHAME. That’s BILL OTTO up there, right next to Kansas Republican Congresswoman LYNN “Great White Hope” JENKINS. And, of course, the irreverend FRED PHELPS of Topeka’s Wasteboro Church.
